Darcy Olds Pro Tips

Effective spider control requires an integrated approach including non-chemical and chemical methods of control.

Some cultural methods to help reduce spiders around the home include:

  • Pruning shrubs and trees adjacent to structures to improve airflow and reduce humidity
  • Exclusion – caulk/seal entry sites like windows, doors and utilities
  • Educating customers regarding environmental contributors at the location (i.e., blooming ornamentals, poor surface drainage, water body close by and any presence of prey arthropods supporting spider predation)

Chemical control is best achieved by using a liquid residual like Temprid SC.

Temprid SC can be applied as a broadcast, spot treatment and crack and crevice application to exterior surfaces of structures (see label for details).

  • Apply to the outside of structures, focusing on entry points such as soffit vents, around water pipes, and doors and windows, as well as overhanging eaves. Apply a perimeter spray one metre up the structure. Also treat underneath the siding where it meets the foundation, as this is a key area where spiders like to hide.
  • Another area to pay attention to is surfaces around exterior lights where night flying insects congregate. Spiders will be attracted to these areas in search of prey.
  • For web-producing spiders, the webs can assist in helping you target your treatments. Treat before removing the webs. Locate the web-lined entrance where dead insects are often found. Treat with a low-pressure shot of Temprid into that opening.
  • Temprid SC’s powerful two active ingredient formulation is co-milled resulting in improved coverage on treated pests and surfaces. The combined additive effects result in fast-acting and long-lasting residual control. Using Temprid SC for difficult-to-control pests like spiders and ants will help to cut down on call-backs this summer. Find out more.
  • Consider supplementing your spider control service with using Drione® insecticide dust to treat voids, cracks and crevices. Treat cracks and crevices that are not sealed, and when possible, seal the area after application. Consult the recently updated Drione label for further details.
